Fred E. "Capt." Adams
"Everything is Beautiful"
- Savannah – Fred E. Adams, 97, affectionately known by his friends as Capt. died peacefully at home on August 28, 2011 under the care of Hospice Savannah Inc.
Fred was born in Savannah, lived in Savannah and loved Savannah. He was the third employee of Colonial Oil Industries where he retired after fifty years of service. Most of his working life with Colonial Oil was spent on the waterfront where he survived three unexpected swims in the Savannah River, a river known for its strong and treacherous current. Fred was the only living person to have a tug boat named in his honor which is currently in service on the Savannah River. He was a resident of Grove Hill for over thirty years where he had been titled by friends and neighbors as the "Mayor of Grove Hill". Fred was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple and was always a man with many friends.
Survivors include his daughter, Frieda Field of Savannah; son, James M. Adams Jane of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Jolie Johnson Timmy of Savannah; Lt. Col. Brenton R. Field, III Irene of Gulfport, MS; James "Bo" Adams Anne-Brown of Atlanta, GA and six great grandchildren. In addition to his family, he is survived by his longtime friend and neighbor, Larry Sanders two caregivers, Donna Woods and Helen Green and friend and member of our family for twenty-five years, Linda Williams.
My family and I lived across the street from Fred & Lillian for several years until 2001. Not a day went by when Fred didn't stop and say hello while 'making his rounds' in Grove Hill. Fred & Lillian were great friends and neighbors. While I can't be at the memorial today, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Tom Bean
